Nearby in Independence is Shula's 2, where Miami Dolphins memorabilia and flat-screen TVs line the walls. Though the focus is on Certified Angus Beef, the menu also includes such entrees as pecan-crusted salmon, baby-back ribs, seared tuna salad and French dip au jus. The club-like atmosphere is casual and slightly more upscale than your typical sports bar.
After a healthy walk on the towpath trail, stop at the Mustard Seed Cafe for an equally wholesome meal. This café and market near the southern park entrance on West Market Street carries a full line of organic and vegetarian foods. For lunch or dinner, you can choose from soups, salads, sandwiches and entrees—and it's not all brown rice and vegetables. The chef's specials include cashew chicken salad, bison burgers and rack of lamb.
For a more indulgent treat, head to Skyway Drive-In. Park your car, turn on your headlights and wait for the carhop to take your order. This old-fashioned joint has been in business since 1952. It serves up burgers with the works, fries, root beer floats, milk shakes and homemade onion rings. Don't forget to roll down your window to hold the tray!
