A century later the freshwater, landlocked harbor on the Pasquotank River rivaled Baltimore as one of the East Coast's ports. It remains busy today, and the city's waterfront and proximity to the Intracoastal Waterway draw pleasure boaters. Nearby is one of the nation's largest U.S. Coast Guard installations, the Air Station Elizabeth City, as well as the Elizabeth City Shipyard and TCOM L.P. This airship and aerostat facility is adjacent to a historic 1942 hangar that launched Navy “K” airships, or blimps, during World War II.
