During the Revolutionary War the village was headquarters for British lieutenant colonel John Graves Simcoe, a close friend of Maj. John Andre, adjutant general of the British Army in North America. As Benedict Arnold's British contact, Andre played an instrumental role in the ensuing scandal and was executed as a British spy in 1780. From 1901 to 1909 Oyster Bay was the site of President Theodore Roosevelt's summer White House.
