Named for Gov. Morgan Lewis, Lewiston quickly grew into a center of trade and transportation; a tramway built by the British is said to have become America's first railroad. Another of Lewiston's innovations is the cocktail, which was invented by a local tavern proprietress who mixed some gin and herb wine in a tankard and stirred the drink with the tail feather of a stuffed cock pheasant.
