Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain, married Elmira native Olivia Langdon in 1870; thereafter the Clemens family spent its summers at Olivia's sister's farm. It was in Elmira that Twain wrote “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” and other classic works.

From early July through late August, the Trolley Into Mark Twain Country travels past historic and architectural points of interest; phone the chamber of commerce for more information. Woodlawn National Cemetery, 1825 Davis St., contains more than 3,000 graves of Confederate soldiers who died in the local prisoner of war camp; phone (607) 732-5411.

Soaring has been a popular activity in the area since 1930, when the first national soaring contest was held. Sailplane rides are available from Harris Hill Soaring Center. .
