A marker just west on US 2 commemorates inventor and pioneer aeronaut Thaddeus S.C. Lowe, born nearby in 1823. During the Civil War Lowe organized and directed a Union balloon force; later he invented several important devices for use in atmospheric observation and metallurgical processing.
