Local legend attributes the town's name to a tribe of Crow Indians called the Red Lodge Clan, who covered their tepees with the local red clay. Coal-mining operations later drew many Europeans to the area.
The Carbon County Arts Guild & Depot Gallery, 11 W. Eighth St., displays the works of local and regional artists in the 1889 Northern Pacific Depot building; phone (406) 446-1370. A red Northern Pacific caboose sits on a section of restored track adjacent to the depot.
