A large boulder at the intersection of US 2 and Sleeping Buffalo Resort looks like a sleeping buffalo. The Assiniboine Indians revered it, and the markings on it had a part in their tribal rituals.
The Little Rocky Mountains, called “island mountains” by early Native Americans, are 40 miles southwest on US 191. Gold was discovered in the mountains in 1884, and the historic remains set the scene for the mountain communities of Zortman and Landusky.
Notable Wild Bunch outlaws Butch Cassidy and Landusky resident Harvey “Kid Curry” Logan hid out in the area in 1901 after robbing a Great Northern passenger train, making off with around $60,000.
The Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge, 60 miles south of Malta via US 191, sprawls across 1,100,000 acres around Fort Peck Reservoir. Drivers can access a scenic, 19-mile, self-guiding automobile tour route from two points along US 191. Signs along the way describe the area’s history, geology and wildlife. Phone (406) 538-8706.
