A sister city to Pontresina, Switzerland, Gaylord maintains the atmosphere of an Alpine village. Buildings of Swiss-style architecture line Main and surrounding streets. An average of nearly 180 inches of snow falls in Otsego County, so skiing, snowmobiling and snowshoeing in town and nearby areas are popular during the winter. The Gaylord Area Convention and Tourism Bureau has guides about local cross-country ski and snowmobile trails. A Swiss essence also pervades community activities throughout the year. Gaylord is the southern starting point for the North Central State Trail System, which extends to Mackinaw City and offers great hiking and bicycling opportunities.
