DESTINATION

Rockland

A granite breakwater, extending seven-eighths of a mile across Penobscot Bay, leads to the Rockland Breakwater Lighthouse at Jameson Point in Rockland Harbor, built around 1888. Self-guiding tours are available on weekends from Memorial Day through Columbus Day. The town's historic Main Street district is now a shopping area. Owls Head Light, 5 miles southeast, offers outstanding views of Penobscot Bay.

In early August it's a true crustacean celebration at the Maine Lobster Festival, which features boat rides, crafts, cooking contests and the coronation of the Maine Sea Goddess. Come hungry—there's nearly 10 tons of lobster to go around.
