Some 1,500 buildings have been preserved in Madison’s downtown historic district, which is considered the largest in the country. The shaded streets are bordered by 19th-century Federal, Classical Revival and Italianate buildings. Georgian structures distinguish the 550-acre hilltop campus of Hanover College, overlooking the Ohio River.
On select evenings in late November and early December, visitors can tour elaborately decorated historic houses, some of which are not generally open to the public, at the Nights Before Christmas Tour of Homes. Carriage rides and carolers complete the experience.
Local farmers sell their produce at Broadway Fountain, located at Broadway and Main streets, on Saturday mornings in the summer.
