In 1822 William Tompkins built a cabin on land that would eventually become the city of Urbana. The town became the county seat of Champaign County in 1833, with the university opening its doors to students in 1868. Today visitors will find a charming, historic downtown balanced with city parks that boast prairies and lakes for outdoor enthusiasts.
Plays and musicals are presented at The Station Theatre, which features the Celebration Company, a local resident theater group. The theater is at 223 N. Broadway Ave.; phone (217) 384-4000.
