The Antelope Valley is well-known for its abundant springtime display of poppies at the 1,745-acre Antelope Valley California Poppy Reserve, on Lancaster Road between 130th and 170th streets west. The reserve's 8 miles of trails (portions are paved) are open year-round; the visitor center is open mid-March through late May. The best viewing time is mid-April. Phone (661) 724-1180.

Lancaster Performing Arts Center, 750 W. Lancaster Blvd., presents music, dance, drama and children's events; phone (661) 723-5950. Also along Lancaster Boulevard, the Aerospace Walk of Honor pays tribute to distinguished test pilots who have flown out of Edwards Air Force Base.
