DESTINATION

Ferndale

The ornate Victorian houses known as “butterfat palaces,” built by Danish and Portuguese dairymen, reflect the town's past and present. In fact, due to preservation efforts the entire town is designated a state historical landmark. Fern Cottage, 3 miles west on Ocean Avenue, is an 1866 farmhouse containing 19th-century items; phone (707) 786-4835.

South of town via Bluff Street is Russ Park, which features 3 miles of nature trails looping through a 110-acre tract of coastal forest. The park is a popular spot for bird-watchers.

The Ferndale Repertory Theatre, 447 Main St., offers several productions each year, including contemporary American, musical and classic plays; phone (707) 786-5483.
