Angels Camp inspired Mark Twain to write his famous short story “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County”—his first published success. The tall tale is remembered each year in May during the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee, held, appropriately enough, at the Frogtown Fairgrounds. Fifty frogs compete in the grand finals in an attempt to break the world record, currently held by Rosie the Ribeter.
