DESTINATION

Washington

Texas frontiersman Sam Houston planned the Texas Revolution of 1835-36 in a Washington tavern in 1834. During the Civil War the town became the Confederate state capital after Little Rock fell to Union forces. In 1875 and again in 1883 fires destroyed much of the business district, and Washington's glory began to fade. In 1938 Hope replaced Washington as Hempstead county seat.
