The winter population of this desert town swells to 1 million during January and February because of the gem and mineral shows in the area. The Pow Wow Rock and Mineral Show began the rockhound winter migration to town in 1965; now 10 major shows entice gem enthusiasts, collectors and jewelers to Quartzsite to buy and sell. In an event that has attained international scope, thousands of dealers offer raw and handcrafted merchandise throughout January and February.
