The notorious outlaw Jefferson R. “Soapy” Smith and Frank Reid, who represented the outraged citizenry, shot it out in a battle that cost both men their lives. Gold Rush Cemetery, 1.5 miles from town, contains the graves of both “Soapy” Smith and Frank Reid.
A stop on many summer cruises along the Inside Passage, Skagway is the northern terminus of the Alaska Marine Highway.
