Cabo Rojo

Mona Island, 50 miles (80 km) off the coast, is a unique island preserve in the straits between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. It has often been compared to the Galápagos Islands for its rare species of wildlife, including giant iguanas, sea turtles and red-footed boobies. The iron Isla Mona Lighthouse (Faro de la Isla de la Mona) was first lit in 1900. Boat and airplane charters are available; for information phone the Department of Natural Resources at (787) 999-2200.
