What To Do In Cabo San Lucas

Catch a water taxi (you can board one at the marina) and ride to Land's End , the southernmost tip of the Baja Peninsula, for a view of El Arco (The Arch). Although this natural granite formation is easily visible from shore (and appears on many Cabo postcards), its sheer size and grandeur are much more impressive up-close. You'll also want to wiggle your toes in the sand at Playa del Amor (Lover's Beach), the romantically named spit of sand adjacent to El Arco.

Charter a deep-sea fishing boat and find out why Cabo San Lucas calls itself the “Marlin Capital of the World.” Striped marlin run year-round; the season for the majestic blue marlin is June through mid-November. Sport-fishing enthusiasts often reserve boats up to a year in advance for events like the Bisbee's Black and Blue Marlin Jackpot Tournament; it's one of the top things to do in Cabo San Lucas.

Gray and northern humpback whales migrate annually from the cold Bering Sea to the warmer waters of the mid- and lower Baja Peninsula coastline. The Whale Photo Safari is a fun way to observe these gentle giants at relatively close range. The best chance of spotting whales is in January and February.

“Do you know the way to San José?” sang Dionne Warwick on one of her signature '60s hits. She was singing about the California city, but you can just head on up the Corridor—the four-lane divided highway from Cabo San Lucas—to San José del Cabo, Baja California Sur , one of the fun places to go nearby. Spend some quality time shopping in the galleries, boutiques, jewelry shops and stores that feature items hand-crafted by regional artisans.

Reserve a tee time (and open up your wallet) for 18 holes of championship golf. The Corridor's world-class courses were designed by greats like Jack Nicklaus, Robert Trent Jones, Tom Weiskopf and Roy Dye.

Slather on plenty of sunscreen, grab a hat and a pair of sunglasses and flip-flop your way to the beach or pool for a day of sun worshipping.

Do a little shopping. At The Glass Factory watch glass blowers melt down recycled bottles and refashion them into decorative pieces. In addition to picking up some travel souvenirs, you can try your own hand at this delicate art.

Venture beyond standard burritos and enchiladas and sample other fare at local restaurants. Cabo San Lucas is famous for fish tacos, and they're whipped up fresh from the catch of the day at The Office , an ultra-casual restaurant where you can wiggle your toes in the sand while you're eating.

Dive right in. The waters around Cabo, especially in the vicinity of Land's End, are great for snorkeling and up-close encounters with marine life from octopus to colorful tropical fish. This is one of the family-friendly things to do in Cabo San Lucas.

Knock back some cold cervezas at a rowdy hangout like the Cabo Wabo Cantina, El Squid Roe or the Giggling Marlin. For a more sedate evening, sip a margarita while watching the sun set from a beachfront palapa or hotel lounge.

Perhaps the best sunset viewing is from the vantage point of a catamaran. Sail away on an evening cruise and behold the rugged rock formations at the tip of the Baja Peninsula loom against a darkening sky. There are a number of cruise options to choose from; your hotel concierge can make suggestions and reservations, or you can check with your AAA travel agency.
