In the waters off Cavendish rest the remains of the Marco Polo, a wooden sailing ship that established a world speed record in 1852 when it sailed from Liverpool, England, to Melbourne, Australia. The vessel ran aground and broke up in an 1883 gale. There are no visible remains of the ship, but a memorial plaque on the shoreline stands near where the wreck lies.
The north shore is noted for its scenic beaches, many of which are operated by Prince Edward Island National Park. A long-established tradition of community lobster dinners distinguishes this part of the province. The feasts pack throngs of people into community halls, particularly around New Glasgow and St. Ann.
