Gravenhurst was the birthplace of Dr. Norman Bethune, renowned for his research in tuberculosis and for the creation of a mobile blood transfusion service on the battlefield during the Spanish Civil War. A pioneer in surgical techniques, Bethune also invented surgical instruments.
A farmers market is held downtown each Wednesday, mid-May to late October. Favorite summertime recreational pursuits include bicycling, fishing, golfing, hiking, swimming and boating, while winter offers skiing and snowmobiling.
