Lakes and rivers abound in this rugged, picturesque area. Paint Lake Provincial Recreation Park is 32 kilometres (20 mi.) south on Hwy. 6.
Also south of Thompson on Hwy. 6 is the starting point for a 10 kilometre (6-mi.) hiking trail that will take you over a bridge to Kwasitchewan Falls, the highest waterfall in the province. Between Wabowden and Thompson, within Pisew Falls Provincial Park, is Pisew Falls, the second-highest waterfall in Manitoba accessible by road. A 1.3-kilometre (.8-mi.) trail leads from the highway through the dense foliage to a platform overlooking the 12.8-metre (42-ft.) falls. Twelve site plaques describe the flora and fauna of this boreal forest. Picnic facilities are available.
Thompson Spirit Way is a combination gravel and pavement path that offers 16 points of interest. Designed for bicycling or walking, the route starts at the Heritage North Museum and ends at Miles Hart Bridge. Though hiking boots are not required, it is essential to wear comfortable walking shoes. The route stretches for 2 kilometres (1 mi.) and highlights include an 86-foot-tall wolf mural that is said to be the largest lighted mural in the world as well as a restored Norseman floatplane and a tribute to firefighters. Display panels share information about the sites and vantage points present scenic views. Official Spirit Way guidebooks may be purchased from the museum or the chamber of commerce.
