Creston

In the 1930s about 8,100 hectares (20,000 acres) of land were reclaimed from the Kootenay Delta for agriculture. The Creston Valley floor is now quilted with a variety of seed and root crops, grains and fruit orchards. Other Creston industries include forestry, dairying and brewing.

The Columbia Brewing Co. , 1220 Erickson St., offers narrated tours of its facilities Mon.-Fri., mid-May to mid-October, Sat.-Sun., July-Aug. Closed toe shoes are mandatory. Complimentary beer is available at the end of the tour; phone (250) 428-1238. Free guided tours of a candlemaking factory are offered year-round by appointment only at Kootenay Candles, 1511 Northwest Blvd.; phone (250) 428-9785 or (866) 572-9785.

Hikers can trek along the old Dewdney Trail, which carried gold seekers from Hope to the Wild Horse goldfields in the 1860s.
