The 1989 Puntledge River discovery of the fossilized intact skull of a 14-metre-long (46-ft.) elasmosaur, a long-necked Cretaceous marine reptile 80 million years old, brought Courtenay to the attention of the world of paleontology.
Courtenay is the terminus of the Powell River Ferry, which makes round-trip excursions to the mainland.
