Settled along the Pocomoke River in 1642, Snow Hill grew into a port town and was made a British royal port in 1694. Warehouses, shipbuilding shops and other businesses sprang up to support the expanding trade, and the town was named the Worcester County seat in 1742. Growth continued despite the decreased national reliance upon water transportation. Snow Hill still is the county seat, but commerce now centers on the agricultural interests that spawned the town.
