Sent by the Philadelphia Co. in 1767, six families from Pennsylvania and Maryland settled Pictou, formerly the site of an ancient First Nations village. The Dutch cargo ship Hector arrived in 1773 bearing 179 passengers from the Scottish Highlands, the first of thousands to emigrate from Scotland to Canada in the next century.
