SCENIC BYWAY

Maine Scenic Highway

38.1 miles: 0 hours, 48 minutes

One of Maine's northernmost scenic routes, the Maine Scenic Highway invites you to experience nature and wildlife at every turn. Moose, black bear, loons and eagles thrive inside dense forests along the route, which consists of rolling hills, distant farmland and deep, cold-water lakes. At the north terminus is Fort Kent State Historic Site, the only surviving American fortification built during border tensions with neighboring New Brunswick known as the Aroostook War.

The wilderness road to Canada follows the path of the Fish River and its chain of lakes. After departing Portage Lake, you’ll be treated to views of Eagle Lake, an 18-mile-long mecca for outdoor recreation, as well as potato fields and wildflower meadows. The quiet route is primarily rural and largely undeveloped, so expect little congestion and few crowds.
