Introduction:

To help members understand the latest automotive technology so they can purchase vehicles that best suit their needs, the Automobile Club of Southern California's Automotive Research Center (ARC) began testing and reviewing vehicles over a decade ago

For the 2024 edition, we include testing and ranking cars and light trucks with the latest technology, including having at least one advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) feature. In addition to vehicle evaluation, the guide covers a number of pertinent automotive topics in detail—for example, the latest advanced safety features, how to properly maintain your vehicle, and new vehicles coming to market in the next few years.

Overall Observations

The bZ4X compact crossover, introduced in 2023, is Toyota's first mass-produced EV. It's available with 1 or 2 motors in 2 trim levels (front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive); we tested the high-end Limited edition with a single motor (201 hp). The bZ4X is reasonably enjoyable to drive. Both the drivetrain and ride are smooth, and the single electric motor provides good low-end pickup. The cabin is spacious, with ample head- and legroom in both rows. The large infotainment touch screen's menus and graphics are current, though it's somewhat nonintuitive to use and hard for the driver to reach. The base XLE trim is well-equipped, and the Limited trim builds on that with upgraded LED headlights, a hands—free liftgate, heated and ventilated front seats, a surround—view camera, and more. Safety Sense 3.0, a comprehensive set of advanced safety features, comes standard. Toyota also provides free maintenance for 2 years/25,000 miles and a year's free charging at EVgo charging stations. Probably the bZ4X's biggest negatives are its limited range (222 to 252 miles, depending on trim), lack of power—most EVs in this segment are quicker—and the distinctly non-premium feel of its cabin. In addition, the exterior and interior styling are a bit quirky, especially with a 2-tone paint scheme.
