Introduction:

To help members understand the latest automotive technology so they can purchase vehicles that best suit their needs, the Automobile Club of Southern California's Automotive Research Center (ARC) began testing and reviewing vehicles over a decade ago

For the 2024 edition, we include testing and ranking cars and light trucks with the latest technology, including having at least one advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) feature. In addition to vehicle evaluation, the guide covers a number of pertinent automotive topics in detail—for example, the latest advanced safety features, how to properly maintain your vehicle, and new vehicles coming to market in the next few years.

Overall Observations

Kia's sporty-looking EV6, which debuted in 2022, shares a platform, powertrain, and other features with its Hyundai sibling, the Ioniq 5. We tested the new-for-2023 high-performance GT trim, with its dual-motor (576 hp), all-wheel-drive setup. The GT's unique exterior design, with its distinctive front and rear styling and rear spoiler, definitely attracts attention. And the EV6 goes as fast as it looks, with a claimed sub-4-second 0-to-60 time. Passenger space is abundant, with plenty of legroom and headroom front and rear. The ride is firm—the suspension is tuned for performance rather than comfort—but not objectionably so. The EV6's steering feel is decent for everyday driving, although some of our test drivers would have preferred it a little tighter. The EV6 comes in at a good price point—not always easy to say for a $60,000-plus car. But consider where your money goes: The EV6 GT is sporty, has plenty of power and cabin space, 206 miles of range, an excellent warranty, lots of tech (a super-fast 800-volt charging system, for instance), and a full complement of advanced safety features. On the negative side, the EV6's infotainment and climate controls can be confusing and difficult to use. The front seats lack comfort and adjustability—even the driver's seat is manual—and are only heated, not ventilated. Finally, vision to the side and rear is somewhat restricted
