Introduction:

To help members understand the latest automotive technology so they can purchase vehicles that best suit their needs, the Automobile Club of Southern California's Automotive Research Center (ARC) began testing and reviewing vehicles over a decade ago

For the 2024 edition, we include testing and ranking cars and light trucks with the latest technology, including having at least one advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) feature. In addition to vehicle evaluation, the guide covers a number of pertinent automotive topics in detail—for example, the latest advanced safety features, how to properly maintain your vehicle, and new vehicles coming to market in the next few years.

Overall Observations

The Tucson, Hyundai's entrant in the super-competitive compact crossover SUV segment, is the automaker's top-selling vehicle. Redesigned in 2022, its changes for 2023 were minimal. It's available as the hybrid reviewed here, as a gas-only model, and as a plug-in hybrid. The Tucson Hybrid delivers solid value for the money: Its hybrid drivetrain is good for up to 38 mpg (for the Blue trim), and its spacious, comfortable interior provides plenty of room for passengers and cargo. It comes with a long list of standard comfort and convenience features, even at the base trim level— all-wheel drive, tinted rear windows, power driver's seat, and heated seats, to name just a few. A host of advanced safety features also comes standard, including some unexpected ones, such as driver-attention warning and blind-spot intervention. Finally, its standard warranty—5 years/60,000 miles—is an industry best. Unfortunately, the Tucson Hybrid also comes up short in a few areas. The cabin contains lots of black plastic trim and other low—rent materials, and build quality feels low. The smooth drivetrain is noisy, and road and wind noise are high. The infotainment system has a high learning curve, and its hard keys lack a tactile feel. Finally, visibility to the sides and rear are restricted
