Introduction:

To help members understand the latest automotive technology so they can purchase vehicles that best suit their needs, the Automobile Club of Southern California's Automotive Research Center (ARC) began testing and reviewing vehicles over a decade ago

For the 2024 edition, we include testing and ranking cars and light trucks with the latest technology, including having at least one advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) feature. In addition to vehicle evaluation, the guide covers a number of pertinent automotive topics in detail—for example, the latest advanced safety features, how to properly maintain your vehicle, and new vehicles coming to market in the next few years.

Overall Observations

Introduced in 2023, the Ioniq 6 shares many components and features with the Ioniq 5 (see page 106), but it has a low-slung, sleek profile instead of the 5's retro boxy look. We tested the top—level Limited trim, with dual motors and a 77.4-kWh battery, good for 320 hp and 270 miles of range. The Ioniq 6 has many compelling qualities to recommend it. Its dual-motor drivetrain provides an abundance of power and torque. The ride quality is very good overall, as is the 6's efficiency (103 MPGe in combined city/highway driving). A 350-kW onboard charger promises a recharge from 10% to 80% capacity in as little as 18 minutes. Interior standard features for all trims include dual-zone automatic climate control with rear vents, heated front seats, a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, and a good-size, clear instrument cluster. Few options are available—or needed. A complete list of advanced safety features is standard on all trim levels; higher trims have avoidance-assistance features, such as cross-traffic side-collision mitigation, which warns of potential side collisions and may apply the brakes. Negatives are few and unlikely to be deal-breakers: The interior uses some cheap-looking plastics, and the sloping roofline limits rear headroom. Some controls are in unusual positions, and the 6's shifter is odd, located on a stalk that rotates the way many headlight controls operate.
