Introduction:

To help members understand the latest automotive technology so they can purchase vehicles that best suit their needs, the Automobile Club of Southern California's Automotive Research Center (ARC) began testing and reviewing vehicles over a decade ago

For the 2024 edition, we include testing and ranking cars and light trucks with the latest technology, including having at least one advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) feature. In addition to vehicle evaluation, the guide covers a number of pertinent automotive topics in detail—for example, the latest advanced safety features, how to properly maintain your vehicle, and new vehicles coming to market in the next few years.

Overall Observations

The Honda Accord, fully redesigned for 2023, is an archetypical midsize family sedan and has been for decades. It's reasonably priced, roomy, practical, and dependable—an excellent value. Honda changed the classification of some of its vehicles in 2023: The Accord and Accord Hybrid (see page 90), for example, are no longer considered separate models. The lower-priced LX and EX trims have a nonhybrid powertrain, and the 4 more—expensive trims are hybrids—which means consumers who want a better-equipped Accord must opt for one with the costlier hybrid powertrain. We tested the EX trim, which is equipped with a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, LED headlights, a digital instrument cluster, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, a power-adjustable driver's seat, and a sunroof. The new Accord is stylish, with sharp lines and a more aggressive look. Significant virtues include plenty of cabin room for all passengers, a spacious trunk, and good fuel-economy numbers (32 mpg in combined driving). All Accords also come with a complete set of standard advanced safety features. Negatives are few in number but not trivial. The Accord's powertrain feels underpowered, especially taking off from a stop. The infotainment system seems outdated, and rear visibility is restricted by back-seat headrests and a high rear deck. Finally, the rearview-camera image quality is poor.
