To help members understand the latest automotive technology so they can purchase vehicles that best suit their needs, the Automobile Club of Southern California's Automotive Research Center (ARC) began testing and reviewing vehicles over a decade ago

For the 2024 edition, we include testing and ranking cars and light trucks with the latest technology, including having at least one advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) feature. In addition to vehicle evaluation, the guide covers a number of pertinent automotive topics in detail—for example, the latest advanced safety features, how to properly maintain your vehicle, and new vehicles coming to market in the next few years.

Overall Observations

The BMW 7 Series flagship sedan got a complete makeover for 2023. We tested the top-trim 760i xDrive, which is equipped with a turbocharged V8, a new 8-speed automatic that includes a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, and all-wheel drive. The 760i is a no-holds-barred luxury vehicle, with all the features and options befitting its $121,000 base price: copious amounts of leather, open-pore wood, and crystal accenting; adaptive air suspension; 4-zone automatic climate control; heated and cooled seats; rear-wheel steering; and a 14.9-inch center touch screen. Other luxury features include the optional Rear Executive Lounge Seating, which tilts the rear seat backward and raises a footrest; a 31-inch video screen for entertaining back-seat passengers; automatic doors; and Highway Assistant, which enables hands-free driving and lane-changing. Overall, the 760i accomplishes its mission: The ride is serene and comfortable, with plenty of headroom and legroom for all passengers. Its turbocharged V8 delivers plenty of power, and handling is responsive for a big sedan. Just a few items might give prospective buyers pause: an infotainment system with complicated, distracting menus; a lack of hard keys for infotainment and HVAC operation; pricey options (e.g., $7,250 for the Rear Executive Lounge Seating); and some polarizing style elements—the large double-kidney grille and crystal accents in the cabin, for instance.
