SCENIC BYWAY

Pacific Coast Scenic Byway, Hood Canal Area

21.7 miles: 0 hours, 27 minutes

The eastern side of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula is outside the boundary of Olympic National Park, but the scenery is nonetheless spectacular. Near Brinnon US 101 twists and turns around impressive mountain peaks as it cuts through verdant stands of conifers. In contrast, the portion of the byway paralleling Hood Canal offers almost uninterrupted water views.

Named for the lord of the British Admiralty, Hood Canal—less than 2 miles wide for most of its length—separates the Olympic and Kitsap peninsulas. Clamming is a popular in summer. US 101 hugs the canal’s western shore for more than 30 miles. The conifers begin thinning out, with shoreside communities like Eldon and Lilliwaup basking in peaceful, watery serenity.
