Lake Superior Scenic Circle Tour, Thunder Bay to Minnesota

41.1 miles: 0 hours, 49 minutes

Skirting the western edge of the world’s largest freshwater lake, the Lake Superior Scenic Circle Tour (PR 61) from Thunder Bay, Ont., to Minnesota is marked by views of rolling hills, semi-wooded farmland and the rounded, forested peaks of the Nor’Wester range. Don’t expect to see Lake Superior from the highway, though, as this portion of the byway runs inland.

Enjoy the open road on Hwy. 61 through rural Ontario. Departing Thunder Bay you’ll see flat-topped Mount McKay looming to the east, part of the Nor'Wester Mountain Range that frames the first half of the trip. Keep an eye out for bear, moose and deer along the highway, especially when traveling at night. The route ends at the Canada–U.S. border at the Pigeon River.
