Frontier Scenic Route, Nipigon to Longlac

The Frontier Route follows Trans-Canada Highway 11 from PR 17 near Lake Superior, arcing north and east through some of Ontario’s most remote areas. Narrow lakes and forests of fir, aspen and birch characterize the landscape much of the way, with rugged, rocky hills of the Canadian Shield crowding around the two-lane road along Lake Nipigon.

In addition to pine trees and lakes, the Frontier Route offers an abundance of solitude, taking travelers away from the province’s more developed areas on a trek through the Ontario wilderness. TCH 11 traces the shores of first Helen Lake and then the southeastern edge of vast Lake Nipigon, one of Ontario’s largest, which is famous for its unusual black sand beaches.
