Adirondack Northway Scenic Highway

107.4 miles: 1 hours, 35 minutes

This stretch of New York’s I-87 highlights the quiet lakes and gentle streams that cut through the Adirondack Mountain region. The journey on the Adirondack Northway Scenic Highway begins just east of Cumberland Bay in Plattsburgh, site of the War of 1812’s Battle of Plattsburgh, and ends in Queensbury, home to the state’s largest theme park.

The Adirondack forest lines the road and stretches over the tops of the mountains along much of I-87, creating a spectacular fall display. South of Plattsburgh, the route crosses the Saranac River, popular for kayaking and canoeing. A slow-moving section of the Ausable River flows under the interstate toward the Ausable Chasm. South of Keeseville, mountains begin to emerge, forming a stately backdrop to Butternut Pond.
