Once used as grazing grounds for Spanish soldiers' horses, El Rancho del Rey—or the Ranch of the King—went through Spanish, Mexican and American hands. The name also changed, from El Rancho de la Nación to The National Ranch. An 1868 land purchase by brothers Frank, Warren and Levi Kimball completed the ranch-to-city transition by bringing infrastructure such as a wharf, roads and railroad. In 1882, the Santa Fe Railway system placed its first transcontinental terminus station on the former ranch, and the Italianate-style depot is the only example of its kind still standing.
