Zhongshan Bridge (Yellow River Iron Bridge)

Chengguan District, Lanzhou, China

Up until 1909, there wasn’t a permanent bridge across the massive Yellow River, but rather a system of unstable rafts tied together. With the help of a German businessman and imported materials for construction, the Zhongshan Bridge (Yellow River Iron Bridge) was built. It makes an impressive backdrop for photos, and is well worth a visit when you’re in Lanzhou.

Bridge and architecture enthusiasts may travel from far and wide to see the Zhongshan Bridge, but many stop by on a multi-day tour of cities along the Silk Road. It’s a pedestrian bridge, so you can safely walk along it and take all the photos you like; the enormous Yellow River is below you, and you can see White Pagoda Park and Lanzhou City from the bridge, too. Another way to view the bridge is on a sheepskin raft—truly a sight to behold.

  • Bring a water bottle when you go sightseeing, since this area is quite dry.

  • Consider visiting at sunrise, if you want to view the bridge with fewer people than in the evening.

  • People stay out late here, since during the day it gets very warm, and many take a midday siesta.

There are several public buses that can take you to Zhongshan Bridge from Lanzhou. Or, you can hop on the Jincheng Sightseeing Bus. If you’re coming from the airport, you can take the Lanzhou Zhongchuan Airport Shuttle Bus to the bridge. Alternatively, take a readily available taxi.

The bridge is open to the public 24 hours a day, so feel free to arrive whenever you like. It’s nice to come in the evening, where you can see the city lights with a beer or tea purchased from local vendors. In the summer, the temperatures during the day are very warm, so take care to wear sun protection and drink plenty of water if you’re out at that time.

Not far from Zhongshan Bridge is Zhangye Road Pedestrian Street. Stop by to shop, eat, and see the ancient sights, such as the City God Temple, which is over 1,000 years old. Or, visit in the evening and head to the night market on an adjacent street, which is busy, fun, and great for people-watching and eating.
