Walls of the Corniche (Chemin de la Corniche)

Luxembourg City, Luxembourg

Luxembourg City is built on a steep-sided river valley, and the Walls of the Corniche (Chemin de la Corniche) were built as a defense around parts of the historic center. It’s now a walkway offering great views across UNESCO-listed parts of the city. The walkway is mostly flat and looks across the Alzette Valley, the Grund neighborhood, and the Rham Plateau.

To walk along the length of the Walls of the Corniche, start near St. Michael's Church and the Schlassbréck Bridge. The walk continues south, ending near Rue du St. Esprit and the National Archives. It generally takes 1–2 hours to walk the 1.2-mile (2-kilometer) path in full, although some en-route attractions could draw you away. You can also just check out the views from certain sections for a quicker visit.

The Walls of the Corniche feature on some walking tours of Luxembourg City. Some just visit sections, while others pass nearby landmarks such as the Grand Ducal Palace and the Pétrusse Casemates.

  • Luxembourg City is very hilly but this walk is flat and suitable for most travelers, including kids.

  • The walls are exposed to the elements so bring clothing to suit the weather.

  • There’s no entry fee.

The Walls of the Corniche are in central Luxembourg City, within easy walking distance of the Grand Ducal Palace and Place Guillaume II. To complete the full walk, start near St. Michael’s Church and end at the National Archives. If you want to head down to the Grund neighborhood below, a public elevator down the cliff makes this easy.

The views from the Walls of the Corniche make a great subject for photography, and the light is usually best early in the morning and evening. Luxembourg City is most pleasant in the summer, but the frozen winters bring their own charms, and walking the Walls of the Corniche is a good way to warm up.

As a very hilly place, there are many places to admire sweeping views in Luxembourg City. Take the free glass Pfaffenthal Panoramic Elevator between the upper city and the Pfaffenthal neighborhood; walk or ride a tram across the Grand-Duchess Charlotte Bridge; or smell the flowers while enjoying the views from the Op de Rondellen Rose Garden.
