Uganda Martyrs' Shrine (Namugongo)
St. Andrew Kaggwa Road, Kampala, Uganda
Uganda Martyrs Shrine Namugongo pays tribute to the 32 Ugandan Christians—collectively, the Martyrs of Uganda—killed in 1886 under the orders of Mwanga II, who was kabaka, or king, of the Buganda kingdom at that time. The Roman Catholic basilica and shrine broke ground in 1965, just one year after Pope Paul VI canonized the deceased as saints. It now draws thousands of Christian and non-Christian visitors alike.
Located just under 10 miles (16 kilometers) by car from Kampala’s Central Business District, Uganda Martyrs Shrine Namugongo is a popular stop during guided city tours. It is of particular interest to Catholic tourists. The shrine was constructed where part of the massacre occurred, making the structure especially poignant. While it is possible to visit independently, it is recommended to come with a guide who can explain the shrine's context and historical and religious significance.
- Aside from its history, the shrine is renowned for its distinct architectural features. Be sure to head inside to admire the domed wood-paneled ceiling from within the basilica.
- The site—where a 19th-century Catholic shrine once stood—also features a thatched pavilion and a lake with water believed to have healing properties.
- Statues on the grounds give background on the persecution that Christians in Uganda have faced, and the legacies of the Ugandans killed in 1886 for refusing to renounce their faith.
- Many guided tour options combine visiting the shrine with Kampala landmarks like the Uganda Parliament Building and Uganda National Cultural Center, plus other religious sites such as Shree Swaminarayan Temple.
Uganda Martyrs Shrine Namugongo is easily reached by private car or taxi from central Kampala. Plan on the drive taking around 30 minutes, depending on Kampala’s notoriously sticky traffic. Most options for day-long guided tours include a stop at the shrine and even offer hotel pickup and drop-off, making reaching the slightly out-of-the-way location even more manageable.
The shrine and its well-maintained grounds are open year-round. Inquire with your hotel or guide about the possibility of attending a mass. Uganda Martyrs Day, a religious holiday commemorated annually on June 3, is the most popular time for Catholics to visit the shrine and pay their respects. Expect thousands to attend special liturgical celebrations that day.
Visitors wishing to experience more of Uganda’s multiple faiths should consider visiting Shree Swaminarayan or the Uganda National Mosque, both centrally located and easily reached by most hotels. The mosque offers sweeping city views from its minaret, while the Hindu temple offers seasonal celebrations and a daily aarti prayer each morning and evening.
