Temple of the Six Banyan Trees (Liurong Si)

Built to house Buddhist relics that had been transported to China from India, the Temple of the Six Banyan Trees—aka Liurong Temple—is a highlight of any Guangzhou sightseeing itinerary. Featured on most tours of the area, the temple complex comprises several buildings, from the Flower Pagoda and Great Buddha’s Hall (home of three bronze Buddhas) to the Hall of Friendship (constructed as a gesture of friendship between China and Thailand).

• True to name, the temple is known for its striking banyan trees, some of which are hundreds of years old.

• Though you can admire the exterior, the interior of the Flower Pagoda isn’t currently accessible to visitors.

Take metro line 1 or 2 to Gongyuanqian Station, then walk the short distance to the temple. Numerous bus lines also serve the landmark. Sightseeing tours take care of the logistics for you.

The Temple of the Six Banyan Trees is typically open daily during daytime hours—verify before going. To take full advantage of the complex’s various attractions, get there at least an hour prior to closing.

The temple is busiest during several key events every year: the Lunar New Year, the Lantern Festival, and the Spring Festival, when people flock to the complex to light joss (incense) sticks. Visiting during those times is an exciting experience, but be prepared for crowds.
