POINT OF INTEREST

St. Paul's Bay

Rhodes

A minuscule cove protected by cliffs, St. Paul’s Bay is reputedly the spot where the Apostle Paul first set foot on Rhodes in AD 51. One of three beaches in Lindos, the water here stays warm as late as October, and the bay is both shallow and protected from winds, which makes it ideal for swimming.

Driving tours and shore excursions of Rhodes and Lindos typically visit St. Paul’s Bay, which is set beneath Lindos’ whitewashed houses. Lindos is overlooked by an ancient acropolis and has an atmospheric tangle of steep medieval streets. The bay’s azure waters are almost completely enclosed by craggy cliffs and backed by bougainvillea, while a tiny, whitewashed chapel sits at one corner of the cove and serves as one of the town’s favorite wedding venues.

  • With its shallow, warm waters, St. Paul’s Bay is ideal for families with children.
  • Bring a swimsuit and towel if you are planning on relaxing at the beach; there are showers and beach clubs along the waterfront that rent sunbeds and umbrellas.
  • There is a tiny beach bar for drinks and snacks; the nearest restaurants are in Lindos.
  • The beach does not have areas accessible to wheelchairs and the steep, narrow streets in Lindos can present a challenge to those with limited mobility.

St. Paul’s Bay is in Lindos, 34 miles (55 kilometers) south of Rhodes Town. The drive takes 50 minutes but buses running from Rhodes Town take around 1.5 hours to Lindos, and are operated by KTEl Rodou. The easiest way to visit the town and beach is by joining a tour of Lindos and then walking to St. Paul’s Bay from town.

This stretch of coastline virtually shuts down in winter, but in summer it’s a popular destination; space on the beach can sometimes be at a premium. Arrive in the morning to secure your spot and enjoy the water before temperatures soar at midday.

With its ancient acropolis and scenic setting above the bay, Lindos is considered one of the most beautiful towns on the island of Rhodes. The warren of narrow lanes are lined with former homes that now house tavernas, shops, and cafés. The acropolis above town commands one of the finest views on Rhodes, while three beaches—Lindos Beach, Pallas Beach, and St. Paul’s Bay—prove ideal for swimming and relaxing.
