Finished in the 14th century, Sibiu’s Lutheran Cathedral (St. Mary's Evangelical Church is one of the city’s most must-see landmarks. Its soaring steeple, pointed turrets, and Gothic facade dominate the city vista, while ancient tombs, sweeping arches, and southeastern Europe’s largest organ furnish the interior.

Towering over Piata Albert Huet, Sibiu Cathedral is a frequented stop on city tours. Spot the statue of bishop Georg Daniel Teutsch, then head inside to see historic artifacts such as the 15th-century bronze font or rumored tomb of Vlad the Impaler’s son. Located on Piata Albert Huet, the cathedral is one of the city’s most central landmarks, adjacent to Piata Mare via Piata Mica. The closest public transit is along the Bulevard Corneliu Coposu–served by buses 5 and13, the Muzeul De Stiinte Naturale (Museum of Natural Sciences) stop is less than ten minutes away on foot.

Though many flock to Gothic Sibiu during the darker months of fall and winter, the Lutheran Cathedral is especially charming during summer, when extended opening hours allow you to soak up end-of-the-day views from the tower’s summit and weekly organ concerts create a powerful atmosphere.

Around five minutes’ walk southwest of St. Mary's, you’ll find Sibiu’s other major church, the Holy Trinity Cathedral. Another must-see sight, this 20th-century Byzantine structure serves the city’s Romanian Orthodox population, which today includes most of its inhabitants.
