Senckenberg Natural History Museum (Naturmuseum Senckenberg)

Senckenberganlage 25, Frankfurt, DEU

One of Germany’s largest and most prominent natural history museums, Frankfurt’s Senckenberg Natural History Museum (Naturmuseum Senckenberg) was founded in 1821. Renowned in particular for its wide-ranging paleontology exhibitions, the museum also specializes in birds, aquatic life, and other taxidermy displays.

One of Frankfurt’s most important museums for over two centuries, the Senckenberg Natural History Museum is a popular educational destination for visitors of all ages. Home to one of Europe’s largest dinosaur fossil collections, its exhibition highlights include everything from a Triceratops to a Diplodocus. Other must-see displays include models of pre-human heads, a taxidermied anaconda, a mammoth, geodes, and a vast array of other rare objects.

The Senckenberg Natural History Museum can be glimpsed during hop-on, hop-off bus tours through Frankfurt, and is also easy to visit independently.

  • Large suitcases, bulky items, and strollers are not permitted in the museum.

  • The museum is accessible to wheelchair users, and wheelchairs are also available to rent from the front desk.

  • Assistance dogs are permitted in the museum.

  • Guided, English-language tours can be arranged in advance of your visit.

  • The Senckenberg Bistro (and accompanying terrace) makes for a relaxing place to enjoy a meal or light snack during your visit.

  • The free Senckenberg app offers an accessible way to explore the museum, while English- and German-language audio guides are available on-site for a small fee.

To reach the Senckenberg Natural History Museum, take U-Bahn line U4, U6 or U7 to Bockenheimer Warte station, or take S-Bahn line S3, S4, S5 or S6 to Westbahnhof station. The museum is also accessible by tram line 16 and bus number 32. You can also bike, walk, or take a taxi.

The Senckenberg Natural History Museum is open daily, with extended hours on Wednesday evenings. It’s closed each year on Good Friday, Christmas Eve, New Year’s Eve, and New Year’s Day.

After more than 200 years of history, the Senckenberg Natural History Museum is currently planning an ambitious expansion project that will see its gallery spaces almost double in size. New exhibitions will also include displays devoted to human evolution, the diversity of life on earth, a planetarium, and much more.
