POINT OF INTEREST

SEA LIFE® Hannover

Herrenhäuser Straße 4a, Hannover

Spread out over 37,674 square feet (3,500 square meters), the Hannover location of the global SEA LIFE® chain of aquariums gives visitors the chance to learn all about life under the sea in our planet's tropical zones. Resident sea creatures live across 37 pools, with stingrays, piranhas, and all sorts of colorful fish among them.

SEA LIFE Hanover is divided into about 15 different areas, which include a ray lagoon housing bluespotted ribbontail rays and cownose rays, as well as a glass tunnel where you can spot ocean-dwelling animals like blacktip reef sharks and green sea turtles. One of SEA LIFE's newest editions, the Expedition Jungle, allows visitors to learn what life is like in a tropical rainforest and hosts special exhibits such as a Cuban crocodile habitat, a “turtle temple,” and an insect area.

  • Photography is allowed, but flash is prohibited as it can frighten sea life.

  • SEA LIFE is wheelchair- and stroller-accessible, with the exception of the observation tower in the rainforest section.

  • On-site facilities include a café with pastries and light snacks as well as a gift shop selling souvenirs and stuffed animals.

  • Except for baby food, outside food is not allowed.

  • Feedings are available to watch every day of the week, so be sure to check the schedule before you go.

SEA LIFE is located inside Hanover’s Herrenhausen Gardens (Herrenhäuser Gärten) and is easily accessible by public transit. It’s an approximately 5-minute walk from the city’s main railway station, Hannover Hauptbahnhof, to Kröpcke metro station. From there, you can take lines 4 or 5 to the Herrenhäuser Gärten stop, right in front of SEA LIFE. If you prefer to drive, you can find many public parking spaces nearby.

SEA LIFE is open throughout the year, except on the day before Christmas, and is generally at its busiest during the summer months and on weekdays and public holidays. It’s usually open all day, but it does close early on New Year's Eve. The timings for daily feedings and ranger-led insect meet-and-greets are listed on the website.

If you love checking out wild critters, it's worth paying a visit to Hanover Adventure Zoo (Erlebnis Zoo Hannover), which puts a heavy emphasis on land creatures. Here you'll be able to visit a range of recreated climates, from a jungle housing tigers and monkeys to an Outback-themed section with kangaroos and emus.
