Sapadere Canyon (Sapadere Kanyonu)

Alanya, TUR

Rocky mountain gorges, turquoise waters, and cascading waterfalls await adventurers at Sapadere Canyon. Formed by thousands of years of water and ice erosion, the natural wonder provides an idyllic spot for hiking and swimming with its 1,300-foot-high (400-meter) cliffs, lush foliage, and scenic backdrop of the Taurus Mountains.

You can visit Sapadere Canyon as a day trip from Alanya. Follow the boardwalk through the canyon—about a 20-minute walk—passing soaring cliffs and cascades, then cool off with a swim beneath a waterfall or enjoy lunch by the waterfront. Many tours also include a visit to Sapadere village, known for its traditional mosque and silk factory; Dwarf cave, in Sapadere valley; or nearby Dim Cayi National Park, where you can hike, swim, or explore along the Dim River on a Jeep tour.

  • Sapadere Canyon is a popular spot for nature and wildlife lovers, and you can spot many species of birds and butterflies in the gorge.
  • Admission tickets are sold at the entrance to the canyon. There’s a restaurant and souvenir shop by the swimming area.
  • You’ll be exposed to the elements, so pack sunscreen and a hat. Don’t forget your swimsuit and towel, too.
  • The canyon is accessible for wheelchairs and strollers.

Sapadere Canyon is 28 miles (45 kilometers) east of Alanya, just outside the village of Sapadere. To get there, head south along the coast, then turn off toward Demirtas village and follow the signs to the canyon. There is no public transportation to the canyon, so you’ll need your own transport or to join a tour.

The canyon is open daily year-round, though opening times vary slightly throughout the year. Summer is by far the most popular time to visit, but it’s often warm enough to swim in the spring season. The narrow boardwalks and small swimming area can get overcrowded during July and August, so plan an early morning or late afternoon visit to dodge the crowds.

Just a 20-minute drive from Alanya, Dim Cayi National Park lies along the Dim River in the foothills of the Taurus Mountains. Outdoor adventurers will be in their element here, whether you want to go whitewater rafting, hike or swim along the river, or admire the stalactites and stalagmites of Dim Cave, one of the largest natural caves in Turkey.
