Saklikent National Park (Saklikent Milli Parki)

Saklikent, Muğla

Though Saklikent translates from Turkish as Hidden City, urban life is the last thing that comes to mind in Saklikent National Park (Saklikent Milli Parki). Encompassing a dramatic gorge that cuts through the mountains, the national park is a playground of river rapids, streams, waterfalls, and cliffs.

If you’ve got an appetite for adventure, you’ll be in your element in Saklikent National Park, where activities include hiking, canyoning, abseiling, and white-water rafting. Extending for 11 miles (18 kilometers) and reaching depths of up to 1,575 feet (480 meters), the canyon boasts incredible scenery at every turn.

For the most impressive views, follow the boardwalks from the park entrance to the mouth of the Gökçesu and Ulupınar springs. Day trips by 4WD from Fethiye often combine a hike in the Saklikent National Park with a visit to the ancient Lycian ruins of Tlos, or a swim and snorkel stop at Patara Beach. Round-trip transfer, which are nearly always included, save you having to navigate winding roads.

  • Although you can explore the boardwalks in most footwear, sturdy shoes and comfortable clothing are essential for hiking and canyoning—wear something that you don’t mind getting wet and pack a spare pair of clothes for the return journey.

  • There are a number of restaurants, cafés, and basic accommodation options along the canyon.

  • There is an admission fee to enter the national park.

  • The canyon is not easily wheelchair accessible.

Saklıkent National Park lies 28 miles (45 kilometers) southeast of Fethiye, and takes around 45 minute to reach by car. Its most convenient to visit as part of a 4WD tour from Fethiye howeverdolmus (shared minivans) run from Fethiye bus terminal to the park entrance.

Hiking and outdoor activities in the gorge are possible from April through September. It’s busiest in July and August, when a morning or late afternoon visit means you’ll avoid peak crowds and enjoy temperatures best-suited to hiking.

After abseiling and canyoning in the Saklikent Canyon, adrenaline junkies can head to the top of Babadag Mountain, one of the most popular places in Turkey (officially the Republic of Türkiye) for paragliding. For hikers, the 315-mile (510-kilometer) Lycian Way hiking trail runs all the way from Fethiye to Antalya along the coast, and offers plenty of options for shorter treks and day hikes. Other activities include horseback riding through the ghost village of Kayakoy, white-water rafting on the Dalaman River, or a quad biking excursion in the foothills of the Taurus Mountains.
