Rosslyn Castle (Roslin Castle)

Roslin

Rosslyn Castle stands as a testament to Scotland's rich history and architectural grandeur, nestled above the picturesque banks of the River Esk in the shadow of the Pentland Hills. Built in the 14th century, the ruined residence takes visitors on a captivating journey through time, providing a glimpse into Scotland's storied past.

A journey to Rosslyn Castle often begins at the iconic Rosslyn Chapel. From there, take a 10-minute stroll past the former coaching inn through Roslin Glen to see Rosslyn Castle on a rocky promontory, surrounded by the River North Esk on three sides. Currently, you can't go inside. The present house, dating back to 1622, is closed to the public, but you can lease it from the Landmark Trust for exclusive holidays.

If you have the time, take a walk or two along one of the well-marked trails through Roslin Glen. To make the most of your Scottish adventure, consider taking an organized walking tour of Roslin Village. Or, embark on a full-day Scottish borders tour, which includes visits to Hadrian’s Wall and Melrose Abby.

  • Check the weather before your visit, as Scotland's climate can be unpredictable. A light jacket and comfortable shoes are recommended.

  • Rosslyn Castle is family-friendly, but some areas may not be suitable for strollers.

  • Rosslyn Castle is occasionally closed for restoration purposes, so check the Rosslyn Chapel website before you visit.

Located 8 miles (13 kilometers) south of Edinburgh, Roslin Castle is easily accessible by car or as part of a guided tour. For travelers visiting independently, free parking is available at the nearby Rosslyn Chapel. If you prefer public transportation, take bus line 37 from Surgeons' Hall to the Original Rosslyn Hotel stop.

Rosslyn Castle is open year-round, seven days a week, making it an easy attraction to fit into any sightseeing itinerary. For the most pleasant weather and scenic views, visit in spring or summer (late March to August). Weekdays typically offer a quieter experience.

Don't stop the adventure at Rosslyn Castle's gates—dive into the charm of Roslin village. Cozy pubs, quirky shops, and the warmth of Scottish hospitality await. Take a bite of traditional Scottish delights and let the tales of this historic region wrap around you like a kilt. Consider taking an organized walking tour of the village for more context on its culture, history, and cuisine.
